The story is all loosely based on a true crime which occurred in Spencer Massachusetts in 1899.

is based on the play 1899 "Sherlock Holmes" written by William Gillette. Sherlock Holmes is sent by his brother Mycroft on behalf of the British Government and Count von Stalburg of Bohemia to retrieve damning documents and photographs from Alice Faulkner. She is keeping these documents in hopes to ruin Stalburg because of the shame he caused her dead sister.
